A Few Questions...

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the rift a week or two ago. Since then, I've been lurking on the forums, watching videos, reading impressions... I just had a couple of questions:

1. Just how bad is the 'screen-door' effect? I saw a tear-down video of 2 guys opening the rift and, after a little bit of work, they were able to remove the screen (It's insanely thin). Do you think most people with dev kits will just open the rift up and replace the screen instead of buying the consumer version?

2. Has Oculus said anything about giving the Dev Kit owners 'dibs' on ordering the consumer version before it's released? Or atleast a discount?

3. Is there a way to update the firmware in the Rift as the tracking gets progressively better?

4. Let's say that Oculus still has pre-orders that they haven't fulfilled when the Dev Kit 2 is released. Will they fulfill the previous orders with the new Dev Kit? (Any speculation on what changes will be made to the DK2?)

5. Any idea what the big announcement from Palmer was/will be?

1. that's exactly how screen door looks like, you have to view the image at 100% zoom at a distance from the monitor equal to the lenght of the horizontal arrow on the top of the image.

2. the didn't say anything because there's no reason for such a discount

3. I don't know

4. I don't think so, I think they'll stop selling the DK1 and fullfill all pending orders before introducing the DK2!

5. (seriously, I don't even remember)

Wow, that looks pretty convincingly approximate to what I see in the Rift (as long as you don't let your image viewer scale it down).

When that image first loads up for a tenth of a second its all "screen door" then it jumps back to the current hi-res version (hit reload to see it jump) - when it is at its worst -that how it looks for anyone using Cup A with good eye sight - no excuses, its that 'difficult'. We know Palmer promised it will be better, but I have to deal with actuals' and at this moment the screen door is... an issue!

>2. Has Oculus said anything about giving the Dev Kit owners 'dibs'...

Nothing said, but I am sure this will play a part in pulling in the first buyers

>3. Is there a way to update the firmware in the Rift as the tracking....

We have seen a number of homebrew updates to the Dev Kits, a lot of people have looked at this as a replacement "positional" tracking solution - http://www.polhemus.com/

>4. Oculus still has pre-orders that they haven't fulfilled when the Dev Kit 2....

You have purchased a Dev Kit 1.1 - they would stop the line and then offer the Dev Kit 2 - would be a different order. I know a number of recipients that have bombarded Oculus with requests to be "updated" when Dev Kit 2's are ready... no answer!

>5. Any idea what the big announcement...

Think that answer may be delayed after the sad news

Also no people won't just be updating their screens, we need depth tracking, different optics and a lower sized screen for the consumer version.

I tried to fix the picture so it doesn't downscale it. Let me know if it works now.

is this really what it looks like in the Rift?

That's not the right scaling, here's a faithful 100% zoom cut 😉

I tried myself to catch it and failed - your images is close, but still too clear, the "screen door" is much more noticeable - there is now talk of up-scaling the current panels (saturation within the eye box of the user). But this is still too little.

Regarding the comments on needs - this is ongoing on a number of forums, but the list:

>depth tracking - Positional tracking seems to be agreed as a must by all, also address some initial spacial perception issues
>different optics - The A,B and C Caps should not be needed when the resolution goes up, but adjustment is essential
>lower sized screen - Sadly I can not see the hype of the original rendered image of the Rift ever becoming reality!

Don't say never!
If the first consumer rift is a big success, be assured that all major display manufacturers will offer any kind of custom curved OLED screen for the second consumer Rift, and a neat design like that of the rendered rift would be well possible!

@Crespo80 - Thank you for slapping me back to reality - I was a little too down beat in that last comment, but it is late.

I agree that the Oculus's greatest benefit for the VR market is that it has started competition, and encouraged others to look seriously at building better panels and systems. Sony was too lazy with the HMZ, the Rift has encouraged them to now have to compete - viv la competition!
