Can you watch movies on the Rift?

I'm still waiting on the delivery of my rift.

I was wondering if it's possible to watch movies or TV series on it? There are so many movies which would look amazing. Not to mention Game of Thrones

Or would it not even be worth it due to the resolution?

My rift also hasn't come yet, but I used to have a dk1. I used an old program to watch movies and shows in a simulated movie theatre and it worked really well even with the lesser resolution.

I imagine something similar must surely exist for the consumer version.

Well you can use Virtual Desktop to watch anything in your Rift that you could watch on your monitor. It is a payware utility but is very well done. But yes, the initial wow factor over how big that screen is in the Rift is pretty cool, but the resolution does suffer.

Bigscreen is fine for this, just came out with a cinema update.

The program is free.

It works great, but dont really use it for movie or series watching, the DPI irritates with for some reason in vr with movies.

Great thank you all. I will take a look at Bigscreen and virtual desktop. Being able to sit a simulated cinema room sounds pretty damn cool.

The rez drop is noticeable at first but after a few min...i forget all about it and the HUGE screen makes up for it. God rays can kinda be annoying for a bit to but you'll get over that too. Good luck!!

No. It's highly illegal and you'll get swatted the minute you're past the studio intro.

The Free app Bigscreen with its new Cinema update is fantastic. I recorded a Video of me using my install of KODI in Bigscreen. Just like how you notice the SDE and Godrays when you first use your Rift because you are looking for them but stop noticing them once you get engrossed in the VR games, similarily after a minute or two you forget that the video on screen doesn't look HD once you get engrossed in watching the movie or TV show in your own personal IMAX.

Of course its not perfect and we all can't wait for higher resolution screens in the next gen Rift in 2019 but people that say VR Cinema this gen is too low resolution and unwatchable are talking through their perfectionist asses.

The new bigscreen cinema is awesome. The distance and perspective is awesome. Literally like being in the a cinema.

@Calibos How do you find the frame rate in the new bigscreen cinema? I'm surprised that I can't get a constant 90. I mean its hardly a game with many moving images. I expected it to be locked at 90. On my GTX1080, if I set it at 1.0-1.5 SS I can get 70-80 frames (using the OTT for overlay). How is it for you?
