Just saw this article on IGN http://uk.ign.com/articles/2015/05/06/oculus-reveals-when-the-consumer-oculus-rift-will-ship saying that the consumer version will be out in 2016 Q1, and we will be hearing more about it in the coming weeks.

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift is expected to begin shipping in Q1 2016, with pre-orders opening “later this year,” Oculus VR announced today.

The company will share more details of its hardware, software, input and unannounced speciality games in the coming weeks, beginning with its technical specifications next week.

*EDIT*

OP, how about taking the question mark off the title now.

The floodgates are about to open on news over the next several weeks...

?
Can't be!
😉

Well, it turned out the date which was the most probable 1-2 years ago, won the fight with 2015 and 2017 scenarios.

But it's sad it has been postponed this much. If Oculus focused on the Rift instead of Gear VR, CV1 could hit the market in 2015.
Well... Just a slip of Vive then, and we'll have all the players in Q1 2016 (Sony, Oculus, Valve). I expect Valve to postpone Vive or "paper launch" at the end of 2015.
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

Do you think they will show this off at E3? If so then we can get a good comparison between the Rift and the HTC Vive.

The last line of the oculus blog about the release says: "E3 is just around the corner — this is only the beginning."
So I'd guess yes, they will show something at E3.

Yeah, this is only the beginning - we're gonna be doing another 2 years of testing, development then we'll release it! :x
