One more thing worth noting! (apologies for the back to back replies),
But it does seem that true AR is being planned for these glasses:
While they lack AR, the technology that overlays digital content on the physical world, Facebook says it eventually plans to embed that functionality.

I heard this is going to be a big part of the discussion in the upcoming Oculus seminar. To be honest, I have absolutely no interest in this device. It does cause me some concern though.
My concern is for existing Oculus products such as their PC and mobile VR platforms. Not concerned about the actual hardware, IMO we have more choices than needed. My concern is with content and future content that Oculus has seemed to loose enthusiasm for. Very much concerned with the silence I'm hearing about future PCVR content from Oculus. I've been really reluctant to buy games from the Rift store even though I regard the Quest 2 as an adequate PCVR HMD. Oculus seems to be setting a pattern of throwing the baby out with the bath water once a new fad starts.
I do hope Oculus succeeds in whatever they choose to do, but if they are indeed abandoning PCVR. That's when we will have to part ways. I'm confident they can do just fine without my business.
Sorry to be the one to bring up the negativity but I can't pretend to be interested in their snapchat glasses or even future AR glasses.

Hi! While I appreciate your concerns, don't read too far into it when considering the future of PCVR or Oculus VR in general. There are a lot different teams here working on all sorts of cool projects (sorry, no spoilers today). This is a new development made with our partners at Luxottica, and kind of lives in between our Portal line of products and Oculus in the grand image of things, maybe even leaning more on the Portal side of the line.

Am I missing something here - this seems pretty identical in function to Google Glass from a few years back?

No you are spot on.
We have been discussing this over on the Mixed Reality Facebook Forum (the Sub-Reddit has already imploded).
Your point is well met.
What the Ray-Ban LIVE offers beyond the Google Glass (2014-15)
Or the original Snapchat Spectacles 1/2 (2015-2019)
Or even the little reported Sony AR Glasses (2015-2018)
All these previous phase of "SmartGlasses" with varying additional AR elements seem to have had a difficult birthing.
If the Facebook entry is as amazing as some have said will be judged by the reaction to the review units next week. But I really wonder if this is more a entry approach (off a Ray-Ban pet project), with the real wows from the "real" Facebook AR system coming soon.

Cheers, I was doubting myself there. If I remember correctly (just checked wikipedia, seems I am), the "difficult birthing" was due to privacy concerns / legislation regarding covert video recording in public places e.g. hospitality etc. Has societal acceptance changed........I think your "real" AR theory may be correct as I've seen some of the Apple concept videos...so that makes me an proper armchair expert hehehe 😉

We are all armchair experts till we get our hands on the product 🙂
The difficult birthing was in part due to the privacy issue, a factor of covering up the light, and also a shock piece in the mainstream media. But other issues was the perennial "hype" machine - promising so much and achieving so little.
I wonder how the Magic Leap 2 will fair in this shark filled water? (if it actually gets a second chance)

Maybe it's me but I can't see there being a market for these things. I hope they sell well and I'm wrong, but I believe facebook was premature in releasing these things.

There are thousands of folks attaching Cameras to their head, like the Go Pro, and recording their activities in first person perspective.
On top of that, YouTube is filled with people holding their phones and using their cameras to record all sorts of events. From weather to sports to crazy things happening in society.
Most news coverage comes from peoples phones these days lol
I think the market is quite huge. The biggest hurdle will be convincing people to record from glasses instead of holding their phones.

I understand people do these things with other devices by the millions. What I should have said is I cant see people spending 300 dollars for what you can do on a phone. Especially being limited to 30 seconds. It could be argued that the spontaneity of glasses vs a cell phone can be the reason. I'm looking forward to seeing the sale numbers.
