Great to hear that this remote working application will be cross platform, so that PC, mobileVR and Standalone will be able to connect together.

Looks cool! 🙂
Let's see how it will develop and features it will present!

Graphics look like cartoons for kids - so I guess this will run on the Quests without any need for rigs 😉
Does the meeting app also work with Rifts and more PCVR hmds?
EDIT: Guess it does work with PCVR too, nice 👍
"Workrooms can accommodate up to sixteen avatars, representing sixteen people in Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets, and as many as fifty people on video, using the companion Oculus remote desktop PC app, which provides a Zoom-like interface for colleagues on PCs in the physical world. "
Future graphics like this would be really awesome!

Hmm FB scanning our faces to create Avatars and tracking... Not going to be much left that is not tracked lol.

I like how some are calling it over on the Facebook Oculus forum "VR Chat with cartoon furniture"!
This will be interesting to try with open eyes - though we will get our media key just before Facebook Connect.
The question about which platforms are supported, it was clear that legacy VR hardware will not be included (no Go no CV1 - but this could change).
Seems a major departure from the original Horizon brief, we will have to wait and see it this is a two tier approach.

It's not a pivot, it is two different Apps. There is Horizon the social world building app, and Horizon Workrooms the workplace App. Two different pieces of Software under a single platform. Kind of like how Microsoft has Word and Excel.
Would one accuse Microsoft of pivoting from Documents to Spreadsheets simply because they have Word and Excel?
For anyone who has watched any of the Facebook/Oculus conferences of the past it is obvious that they have been talking about integrating the Workplace in to VR for years.
Calling it a pivot is a huge misunderstanding of the technology. Calling it a departure is worse, since nothing is actually being departed here. Facebook isn't abandoning Horizon in favor of Workrooms.

It is certainly cartoonish, for now. Considering that you yourself have promoted cartoon VR Arcade attractions, like Mario Kart, Pac Man, and that Bunny Rabbit game, I presume you would appreciate a cartoonish VR Workspace App 😁

Yeah seems they have changed quite a lot in the last year to year and a half.

The great problem with the video is that it makes Horizon look like a playground for 7-year-old kids, or present activities that persons with learning disabilities may not find too hard. That may be fine of course - it's that's the audience you want - but I really like the new more mature focus on a Meeting Room for up to 50 persons. (as long as it does not turn out to be a new form of VR Chat)
Let's remove all the childish/kid stuff and focus on pure adult activities (no pun intended). I do not spend time with other kids than my own - thus Horizon full of kids and teenagers would have zero interest to me.
But invite a famous professor to give a lecture in the new Horizon University Auditorium, and I'm all in 👌

Your right, though I understand that those invested in the hype will not want to see that things have pivoted considerably from the original promises and video.
We were lucky over at the largest VR Forum to have direct observations from a previous member of the Horizon team who was one of the many departures at the end of last year from the original team. Seems that was the point that FB made some major changes to their business plan after evaluating the year long private Beta.
Though we have to treat his kind of information with some objectivity, at least it is from a attributed source, rather than from the over invested fandom.
The current structure of the business plan was suggested now as representing a three tier approach:
- Horizon Community
Area for user generated content, along with world building and games [similar to what was achieved with RecRoom]
- Horizon Workrooms
Collaboration tool, and commercial business hub [similar to what was achieved with VIVE SYNC]
- Quest Home
Very similar to the business approach used on Oculus Go rooms [similar to what was achieved with GearVR Milk VR]
Each one of these tiers (or slices of the pie) will be rolled out in a much less functional version as was previously hoped, as the company evaluates the need they are prepared to invest for moderation. In particular the 'Horizon Community' has proven a difficult burden to take on. Only a matter of months ago the closed Beta saw root and branch banning of problem accounts.
Obviously there are still issues that are proving difficult - and questions that are unanswered in operation. With Horizon Workrooms the cross platform support by other headsets has begged questions on how this data will be tracked and if FB login will be needed to a special account - this could prove prohibitive in many owners interest to use this, in comparison to what HTC launched last year with 'VIVE SYNC' that is actually being used by operations now, rather than being launched.
The rumors at the time of the departures that Horizon was being "sunsetted" seem to have been over stated, but it is clear that the offering have pivoted in a much more reduced and segmented offering. We can expect at FB Connect to hear more on the different elements. And at the same time the previous team will be able to give their views on what the original intention had been and what has had to be cut back on.
