Also be carefull with this, because if you get the 980ti, then the additional pcie slot is no longer useable cause the card will cover the second slot once its added.

so if your usb's arent up to spec, then you cannot add the usb card to it.

If you dont get the 980ti then no worries.

And how much power does the Rift draw through the USB ports? It must take a fair bit of juice to light up those two HiRes OLED panels?
Very low power consumption is one of the benefits of OLED technology.

OLED can supposedly use more power than other mobile display tech if it is used for high brightness images. However I bet with low persistence keeping the screen off most of the time it will be very low power consumption indeed even in a bright scene.

Hi guys, first off want to thank all the contributors to this topic and forum in general. Regrettfully I only read this topic now and the coupon is no longer valid. I currently own an ASUS ROG G750JS (geforce 870) laptop. Think it should be relatively alright to start with, but will definately need an upgrade. So if any god bless one of ya 🙂 finds a similarly awesome deal, please post it here?

PS preordered my CV1 in the UK and just cant wait...

Please run the Oculus Compatibility Tool. You may want to know that laptops are not supported.

Hi cybereality, now I'm having a heart attack.

Not supported at all a a class of devices or the same requirements applied to them?
I did run the tool, got CPU and GPU failed (i7 4700HQ and GTX870m).
Other points were fine.

My plan is to use oculus for not so demanding games (probably with low graphics settings) and 3d movies and then eventually building my own desktop rig.

Is this plan then born dead?

I'm really sorry, but mobile graphics chips are not supported. This means the vast majority of laptops either won't work at all, or have serious problems. In addition, even assuming it worked, the performance requirements are too much.

That said, some people have had varying luck with laptops, especially if they do not include Optimus (which is the main issue killing laptops). There are also desktop GTX 980 notebooks (NOT 980M) and these do seem to work.

Cybereality, thanks for your reply really, I appreciate it. Sounds like the upgrade will have to come quicker. Although I will try to find a work around at least out of sporting interest.

Good point. I found a picture of the motherboard. It looks like there is a nice gap between the PCI express 16 and the extra pci slot. Do you think that the GTX 980ti will cover both?

Are all of these comments related to gaming? I thought that the video card requirements were due to latency concerns for head tracking, etc.?

I've read that both of the Oculus Development kits were able to run (perhaps not perfectly) on laptop graphics cards, so if you're just watching a movie and not concerned with precise head tracking then shouldn't the CV1 work the same?

Or will Oculus somehow just not let the Rift handshake with an HDMi port that it doesn't fancy?
