Has lens marks and scratches effected visuals yet

I have had my rift for about 6 months and the lens easily scratches and gets marks that don't come out even with safe lens cleaner. I'm not even sure how that happened since I treat my rift like I'm handling eggs. So far no visual effect. Anyone out there have had their visuals effected yet by what I described?

Small scratches can be safely removed if they are interfering with vision. I know because I have done so.

After being so very careful, while taking off the headset the touch controller fell out of my hand and onto one of the lenses, leaving a decent sized scratch/scuff in the lens about 3mm diameter.  It was a bit off center and I did not notice it while actively gaming, but it was still a drag, appearing as a decent sized smudge when looking off center.

Long story short: after some research I found that it is possible to remove small scratches on plastic lenses. I chose the method of using a metal polisher called simichrome. I first tested it on an edge of the scratched lens to make sure it would not affect the lens. That went well so I went after the scratch, and it was a scratch/scuff, as it could not be wiped off, even using Zeiss lens cleaner. Wish I had taken before and after pics, had no idea it would work so well so fast.

I used a cotton Q-tip and an extremely tiny amount of the polish. It only took about 4 seconds of light circular motion and the scratch/scuff was completely gone.  Lens good as new.I then wiped off the remaining polish with a another Q-tip, and then cleaned the lens with Zeiss lens cleaner.

Now I know Oculus says not to use any liquid of any sort on the lenses. But I had nothing to lose in trying, and it worked. Also, you cannot just keep forever wiping a lens with a dry cloth and expect the lens to stay clean. At some point you need some way of getting buildup off the lens.

Just wanted to post this as I cannot be the only person who has somehow damaged their lens.

And BTW: first contacted support to see if lens could be replaced: not at this time.

Very interesting read 🙂

What I have been doing, is place the headset higher to get the "smudge" out of the center of my view. But it's annoying enough (a bit like a dead pixel) that I'll be checking out your findings 🙂
