How is Pimax 8k VR able to use 4k screens? Why don't Oculus up the Res if it's doable now?

Just wonder how the Pimax is able to run two 4k screens at around 82hz to 85hz? If this is doable why isn't Oculus looking to beat them to their release in 2018?  I know it would be an expensive headset, but aren't the latest Cpu and Graphics cards expensive? You get plenty of people purchasing these for their computers, so there's no need to complain about a more expensive VR headset. You could keep the CV1 as the cheaper option into VR, but for those who could afford a more expensive VR headset why not?

Edit: I talk about a higher end VR headset been available now, because I don't think 4k screens aren going to get much cheaper any time soon.

Another possible reason they aren't releasing is simply that they intend to innovate in an entirely different direction, e.g. curved screens.

It's difficult to imagine so many optical fibers of 5-10 micron size, collimated and ground and polished, but it sounds like a wicked concept. HFS. And they probably have to be aligned with the pixels on the screen.
it almost forces bare eye use, or a contact lens, to allow the eyeball to be centered in the screen.

I get the feeling Oculus is sitting on many advanced patents for example in optics but we have not really seen these yet in their first generation hardware. I'm guessing we will start seeing them in the next generation. Maybe even with Oculus GO.

The problem i see right now with native 4k vr headsets is the power it needs with even the best gpu's and not only do you need the best you also will need to be stressing that card out to the max. i only have a gtx 970 and that thing gets hot when playing vr compared to playing non vr games.

That said, this is essentially another Pimax thread which really belongs in the Mega thread. I'm sure this discussion would have happened there. But... if everyone is cool with multiple Pimax threads then to hell with it.

I went through the form categories:

https://forums.oculusvr.com/community/categories

And did not see a section for "Mega threads"?

Are you really just suggesting in lumping all posts about a topic that is not OVR related into a combined thread pushed into a corner?

This is the mega thread Kevin, all 26 pages of it

It would only be consigned to a corner until the next post was added, then it would be right back up there. Although given the topics and technical what-nots discussed, there's an ever decreasing likelihood of usefulness there-in.

The Pimax 8k headset requires a 1080ti at minimum wither other high minimum requirements for its PC.  In addition, the headset itself is more expensive.  If you could simply bump up the resolution on the Oculus, then there would be absolutely no reason to be interested in the expensive Pimax headset.  False advertising also draws me away from Pimax.  4k screen+4k screen does not equal an 8k screen.  It's completely false advertising.  And, if you've seen reviews of their product so far, it really isn't good.  It's basically the equivalent to an indie game.  The trailer makes it look awesome, but it is really just another cheaply made headset.

Always interested in the animosity to this and the StarVR headsets. I thought it may be just fair to say - these are a thing, and I wonder if they will succeed, rather than turning the thread into a slagging session. Its as if there is a discomfort with anything that wants to try and enter the consumer scene that is not painted in OVR colors?

I agree Primax[sp] has a big hill to surmount, and there are a lot of issues in their offering - but I feel the same with TPCast and especially with StarVR and OSVR, but I will not shoot them down before they have even got out of the slips! That just seems lazy and self serving.

Yeah, definitely.  I can imagine that it is very difficult for these relatively small companies to attempt to compete with the HTC Vive and the Oculus.
