Following on from the posts at a discussion we started. We decided to create its own discussion on this growing subject of interest.

- We propose to have a report on the new FarCryVR [PC-VR] experience that we reviewed.

- We will also be reporting on the new Phenomena Arena [Standalone] experience we are covering.

These are not only going to be big but they are going to kick off intergrated AR/VR in a big way, i mean imagine say lazer quest of the 80s but with VR/AR that makes those big empty buildings becomes the opening scene war torn landscape of the Terminator movies, or the corridors of the Sulaco as your team move down hunting the Alien......AR/Vr is going to be the next big step and these places are going to help push that tech, hell i suspect AR/VR will be in everything from airsoft to Go kart racing at some point.

I have to agree (but you would expect that 🙂 ).

The LBE and FEC venues all have depended in some case on lasertag or bowling as a secondary attraction - and the space of a lasertag arena could easily now be considered for repurposing as a Standalone VR Arena. There are already several installations already in operation such as the SPREE Interactive installations using standalone VR from Pico [image].

And we also have the new VEX Arena using HTC Focus3 [image] that has also rolled out a special version of their arena aimed at updating lasertag sites.

I am really interested in the work being done in AR (XR), with a couple of systems that will be launched at the end of the year that use some quite powerful commercial AR glasses, including the new Sony platform [image].

As you were saying this last one offers a strong film tie-in deal, adding to the draw of commercial entertainment.

I like that they continue to use the word "comeback" as it adequately describes how this sector has been struggling to return to the success of the Arcade era of the 80's. So at least they are honest about their current dilemma.

As for the article itself:

  • It talks about a prediction (wishful thinking), not the current state of the sector.
  • Sales numbers are not revealed.
  • Zero business model is discussed.

They have been trying to make a comeback for at least 5 years now. Unless they take a better approach, they will remain in "comeback" mode.

Laser Tag is a failed business model though; so all they are doing is updating the technology and hoping (wishful thinking) that this revives something that is archaic. Kinda like trying to ride a horse on the highway.

And relying on the HTC Focus3 is rather telling. HTC has a weak track record in the VR Market, and their business is only surviving because of the Google buyout. If the Location Based VR sector is supposed to be thriving and worth billions (as we have been previously told), then how do they not have their own manufacturer of a LBE specific headset? Licensing headsets from Consumer VR manufacturers is just another sign that this sector has not matured.

Are they wearing GB boiler suits, AR/VR GB, i want this NOW!. lol

Yeah the full Ghostbusters outfits, and ghost meters linked to the AR content - real sweet with the added props.

After a 30-minute team-based game, the player is totally immersed in the experience, and the action proved a real workout, wielding the gun and blasting attackers with a heart-pounding final boss battle. Having tried all the Zero Latency VR game experiences since they launched, this game is the most refined, and feels like a AAA title

Hmm, the title is only 30 minutes and has zero hand-tracking. How can it be a AAA title?

I would like to see a more unbiased review, tbh. The review makes claims that it doesn't attempt to substantiate. It is a hard sell to claim that a 30-minute title with zero hand-tracking is a VR AAA Title. At least make a single cross-reference comparison to other AAA titles, like Half-Life: Alyx.

I mean geeze... consider that people can actually play the real FarCry games (like FarCry 3) in VR using VorpX. Which includes hours of open-world AAA goodness with hand-tracking. Kinda hard to claim that a 30 minute arcade version is also AAA.

Reference to 4D physics is fun.
