New user, can't create thread - PLEASE READ THIS

NEW USERS SHOULD BE FULL MEMBERS AFTER CREATING ONE POST. IF YOU HAVE ISSUES CREATING A THREAD OR POSTING, PLEASE PM ME. THANKS

*** Below is the original post, but see above for the latest requirements. ***

Due to an ongoing problem with spam, we have enacted certain restrictions for new members. As a new member, you will be restricted from creating new threads/topics, and unable to use BBCode in your posts.

Please contribute to existing threads first, to obtain a certain amount of posts before you become a full member.

You may use the search function to find relevant threads to post in. Most likely someone else has posted a similar problem, and you may even find there is already a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but this should make for a better spam-free experience for everyone.

UPDATE: The number of posts needed to become a full member is 3.
See here for some help making your first few posts:
https://developer.oculus.com/forums/vie ... 100#p49840

UPDATE 2: You can also PM me with a message telling me who you are or why you want to make a post on the forums, and I can make you a full member. Also, if you have purchased a Rift with the same email as on the developer center, just let me know and that will be enough to make you a full member. I just want to be sure you are not a spammer. Thanks.

UPDATE 3: The post requirement has been lifted. Everyone should be able to create topics now.

UPDATE 4: Spam has returned, so now the 3 post requirement has returned as well.

UPDATE 5: Spam has gone away for now, so I removed the requirements.

UPDATE 6: New users only need 1 post before becoming full members.

This seems quite a sensible approach.

What about those who just wish to link references when they post? An alert method should be automated, but the actual banning should be done by moderators who can address it by content in a way that automation wouldn't.

I think that is a good idea and thats what i have suggested the last few times because of the spam problem. It sucks but its better then to have a forum filled with spam :-).

I suppose. Though it means new users have to spam the forums zero content posts (like this one 8-) )

So, we have to pad our post count if we want to start a new thread?

Hmm... how would I go about padding my post count... lol 😉

How many posts is that? Was the spam so bad?

A 10 post count isn't hard to pull off but isn't this kinda encouraging a new member to "spam" the forums to reach the 10 post count so they can post legit topics/BBCode? If a spammer wants to spam he will make 10 quick post and be spamming with topics in a few minutes. A new legit member will not want to spam so they will have to spend time making "legit" post just to create a topic about their problem, post new demo, ect. Problem with automating spam control is that trolls have no life if they want to spam they will spend the extra few minutes to do so. "Where there's a will, there's a way" Seems like it would be easier to allow someone from the community to be a low level moderator or hire one.

Ha, so that's the thing? I was wondering why the button didn't show up.

Yeah, kinda sucks that legit users need to spam to avoid spam (yo dawg).

10 posts should be easy though, the off-topic forum has plenty of threads one can post a quick reply to.
