nice! 2-3 months to go...start selling those 980s
assuming these numbers turn out to be true...
A) is a 34% increase enough to make you ditch your 980 so soon? B) is an 11% increase over even the rumored top end nVidia enough to make you switch to AMD?
For me, it'll depend on a couple of things: 1) VR support 2) Price Difference
I already know that I want to use VR for gaming going forward so the inclusion of VR support is a "Must" IMO. Beyond that, I'm willing to spend a little more to get that extra percentage in performance but, not 50-100% more ($).
So rumour is the Ti has 23% above the 980- I don't think I will be dumping the GTX980 anytime soon when those sorts of gains can be achieved with overclocking.
I reserve judgment until the official power consumption figure are released for the new AMD cards- I'm willing to bet it won't be anywhere near as efficient as Nvidia cards.
Also, the R9 390x reports to be 45% greater performance over the GTX980- but just look at how many cores are required for that gain.
PC Specs: i7-5820k, 16gb DDR4 2400mhz, MSI gaming mainboard, MSI GTX 980 4gb, Samsung Pro SSD, 2x1tb WD Black HDD, 700w Certified PSU, 3xAcer 27" monitor, 47" TV, Xbox360 Controller, CH Pro HOTAS, Fanatec Wheel+Pedals, Windows 7 64bit.
presumably if it is only 23% quicker than the 980 then its core speed wont be much different (as the cuda count alone accounts for that) so presumably the 980ti/titan2 will overclock just as well as the 970 and the 980 do..
(its exactly the same argument some people with 970s use against the 980, as with enough overclocking an overclocked 970 can match a stock 980)
if the 980Ti is sensibly priced - and it maybe if AMD pull their weight and produce a card that can compete then whilst use 980 owners will not be thowing our cards away to upgrade, it may make the Ti a nice card to go to if buying new from a lower end piece of kit.
as for AMD needing more CUDA cores.... personally I do not care. If the price was right and it is stable, does not need a powerstation to run then, the CUDA core is just a number and is irrelavent really.
Loss of physX and weaker driver support however is what would put me off a little.
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂
I'm stuck with Nvidia until AMD decides to make better Linux drivers. Can't really complain though, I'm very happy with my 980. It should last me until I do a full system upgrade a year or so from now.
Probably going to purchase another 980 for SLI once the VR SLI drivers are ready. Other than that, well, I'll wait until the CV1 is released before making any decisions. I suspect that 2x 980's in SLI will last for a few years at least.
Current WIPs using Unreal Engine 4:Agrona - Tales of an Era: Medieval Fantasy MORPG
Waiting for the next generation of cards to come out and hope that the CV1 comes out a few months later so I can "reload" my wallet. Probably going with the 380X (if those numbers are true.)
