VR Laptop Recommendations

Hi All,

I have been asked by my Cousin for VR laptop purchasing recommendations. I know the specs required from a desktop and presume it's similar to laptop specs now.

I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for specific VR laptops on sale now.

I only ever use desktop machines apart from my work provided laptop.

He has shown me these

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

He has a Quest 2 by the way.

Now I know 20xx Nvidia are common but are 30xx out there yet in laptop form.

I think he is looking at about 1400GBP ish and below price wise, so obviously it wont be at the top end of the market..

It sounds like 3080 mobile GPUs are coming this month, maybe. They aren't actually announced yet, its just leaks so far.

When I look at laptops, I go for Clevo based models, such as Metabox. My current Clevo (GTX 980M, desktop 4GHz 4790K) has lasted 4 years as a VR workstation, since the days of "oculus headsets don't work on laptops" with the CV1. 🙂
Their top models usually leave out "features" like optimus that mess up VR. Of course battery life is near zero, but they aren't made for intense use on the move.

I might upgrade once a Clevo has a 3000 series GPU.

(Clevo don't sell to the public, they make the base models for many laptops that are then resold under alternative brand names by other companies, like Metabox, Sager, Origin, Horize)

The MSI looks fine. I don't really know much about their laptops but I'm using one of their 2080TI cards. 🙂
It's got hdmi, display port and usb-c, so it should handle any VR headset you throw at it (except a 3 sensor CV1 unless you get a hub, since there's only 3 USB type A ports).

I usually go for a 17" laptop, but they are less portable. My laptop use case was: "leave it on my desk at work, occasionally lug it to a classroom when needed". I use a Surface Pro for mobile (non-VR) use.

Thanks Kojack, seems to be working fine. He has Asgards Wrath working on Epic settings so he is happy and quite in awe of PC VR now. He loved the Quest 2 stand alone games but found them a little shallow and basic.

He is a bit impulsive, I said we should spend a little time picking the right one but he just went for it. 🙂
