Over on Facebook, Zuckerberg posted news about the introduction of "Shops" on WhatsApp and Marketplace. This is the first step in bringing a full fledged e-commerce "digital world" to life. And the next target will be AR/VR.

  • New features coming soon to support businesses and make shopping easier: Shops on WhatsApp and Marketplace, Instagram Visual Search and Shops Ads. More detail in the comments.
  • Shops on Marketplace: more than 1 billion people use Marketplace each month, so we're making it easy for businesses to bring their Shops into Marketplace to reach even more people.
  • Shops on WhatsApp: soon you'll be able to view a Shop in WhatsApp so you can chat with a business before buying something. Businesses only need to set up their shop once to have it work across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Aside from today's post, a few days ago Zuckerberg spoke at the VivaTech Conference. You can watch the full video here:

The biggest take-a-way from the VivaTech Conference is:

  • Emphasis on Facebook Shops.
  • This will contain a true storefront with full e-commerce.
  • The roadmap includes the eventual move in to AR and VR.

The implications here are quite huge. Being able to put on your Oculus HMD and travel to different storefronts from any business owner around the world and interact with their goods before purchasing them is quite astonishing when we consider the advantages of engaging in this activity within Virtual Reality as opposed to a flat-screen App or Website.
