Will this headset be overkill?

Anonymous

Hi, I run business events and want someone who hasn't been to one to experience them using a VR headset. My question is, will the Rift headset be overkill to view a 360 video? Or is it worth the investment for better quality viewing? Also, if anyone has any experience of filming in 360, what camera would go best with the Rift?

Very grateful for all help and advice. Thanks

At this point the only choices you have are mobile phone based VR (which can often have higher resolution and if you have the phone already its cheaper - i.e gear VR or google daydream) or PC based wired VR like Vive and Rift.

You may also want to look at the new microsoft HMDs coming very soon, slightly higher res, easier to use (tracking) for 'dumb' applications especially like video and possibly a bit cheaper too.

Rift is more for gaming than just 360 video (which is a severe under utilisation of it, and VR's prowess anyway) and also has a lower res than the top end mobile phone VR (but understand mobile phone VR is very dumbed down for 'real VR' lacking proper controls, positional tracking etc but fine for 360 videos). Pretty much any VR HMD will play 360 videos fine, but if on a mobile you'll need to make sure the specs are good enough to keep up with the playback.

Shorter answer, yes Rift can do it but if you are only going to use it for 360 video then yes it's overkill + you need a good computer to hook it up to.

Go with the Gear VR, definitely.  S7 or S8 (not the larger ones) have the best image (Pixel Per Inch).

Now, the video, that's the difficult part - 360 video is usually rubbish unless professionally done with extremely expensive equipment.  Take a look on the forum at what people say - it's one of the biggest let-downs.

You'll be better off using 180 degree videos. The quality of 360 degree videos is piss poor. When watching 180 degree VR Porn videos (purely for science of course!) you can clearly see the difference in quality between 180 degree and 360 degree videos, most 180 degree VR Porn videos are 4K these days and you can REALLY see the difference. It's cheaper and looks a lot better.

Actually, cameras are coming down in price...

Yes, just get a GearVR.

Thanks very much for all the advice that's really great. And if I had a Samsung I'd just use the GearVR mobile option but I have an Iphone 7.

Also such a shame that the 360 camera's aren't up to much, really gutting in fact.
