how to get more people to buy Oculus Rift?

The simplest solution I can think of is to convert existing Gear VR owners into Oculus Rift owners.
The easiest way forward might be social VR experiences (like facebook) that allow VR cross interaction between GearVR and Rift.
A virtual penny for your thoughts.

One of the biggest things that help HTC is getting the Vive into the wild - and to be open to demo's and even the use of their hardware in commercial settings such as the DOE sector. This has also worked great guns for Samsung and GearVR - just announcing the expanding of their VR rollercoaster projects with Six Flags.

But for OVR, they have spent more time blocking the use and commercial application of their hardware, and also seem to be shying away from promotion: http://www.theverge.com/2017/2/8/14550488/best-buy-oculus-rift-vr-demo-station-closure

There is a serious danger of a re-run of the 1990's collapse of interest in VR if OVR just keeps on sitting on their hands and avoiding eye contact with the VR community. We know they have some great games in the wings, but if the consumer scene has been only hearing bad stuff about OVR, then this won't help regain credibility.

The Microsoft store in my city has Oculus Rift products in a box, but all of their live demo's are with the Vive. That doesn't help I'm sure.

I think Oculus/Facebook should be investing in setting up VR arcades in as many big cities around the world as they can, it would get a lot more people trying their headset. It would have the added bonus of people trying VR in ideal setup's, on top end PC's maintained by people who know what they are doing so bypassing a lot of the issues stopping people from investing at the moment ie cost, space, pc knowledge etc. It may even be a profitable side business but more importantly it could really get more people on board with VR and Rift.

Until prices drop, help them get a better job/education so they can make more money to buy it  😛

And where do the people currently in those jobs go when you get that better job? The shape of the monetary distribution pyramid isn't going to change by more people getting education. You getting smarter and pushing someone else out of a position isn't going to help, where does that person go besides down. That would take new jobs. New jobs and new competition comes creating fair prices comes from more equal distribution of wealth to the extent that you get back when you put in. In my country and in many we take advantage of a surplus of labor (always rising population) and pay as little as possible in most cases. Fair pay and more competition in the market come from paying people for what they put in. Laws that some people will label as socialist (i call common sense personally) will be needed and not good will or prayers.

Paying people a fair wage for getting up, commuting to work, working a full day, commuting home, taking a shower, needing to rest from the experience (for some jobs), all just like the people distributing the paychecks (or more, often more in my experience) is the answer to so many problems.

Result:
Oculus not a niche product and more games made for it.
PC gaming computer not a niche product.
Tesla not a niche product.
Organic foods not a niche product and they are fresher is store.
More people with the money to compete and bring prices down.

How about making a software update that actully works. The general tracking is so bad for so many of us, and when they release an update that's meant to improve things, but just adds problems for lots of us, how am I going to be recommending this mess. I show my freinds Oculus, and tell them to get a Vive. The way they can get more customers is to have a tracking systems that's easy to setup, and works for everyone. Also if they communicated with us much better, that would help.

If people can try it, and i mean on their own for a few hours, they will buy one.

The answer?  No idea.

Poor people will always buy the latest smartphone, they will buy a Rift if they know about it.
Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3

Thank you for your enlightenment @Thane_

It was merely a joke because its a luxury. People who want luxuries need the ability to afford them. Luxuries are for the people with higher paying jobs that come from better education and skills.

It's quite simple. People need to experience VR before they 'get it'. All they need to do is have demo stations in shopping centers/malls around the world. Not in shops like Best Buy or Gamestop but actually on the shopping center/mall floor. This way EVERYONE will see it from the average housewife to pensioners to gamers.

Have them appear in these places regularly, say once a month to keep the costs down and you'll see sales skyrocket.

I'm surprised that Oculus and HTC didn't do this for the launch at least tbh. I guarantee you that 1 in 10 people trying out a VR headset at these demo stations will buy one

I have seen that so many times, its shocking! But its mainly due to the free financing. Poor people can easily scrounge up $25 a month to have the latest phone tech. I would say most of the time they never have more than $500 in their account. So to come up with $1500 for the complete package is difficult. Cell phones however are pretty much a necessity now, so you get almost everyone in that market needing a phone. If VR was like a necessity, poor people would easily finance a Rift for $30 month.
