i7 6700K vs i7 4790K

I'm building my first PC and I want it to be powerful enough to make it through the entire lifecycle of the CV1. Can someone who is knowledgeable tell me if it's worth it to get the i7 6700K over the i7 4790K? Or would I be better served spending the $100.00 difference elsewhere?

I'll be using a EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB SC.

i have an i7 3770k running on a gigabyte g1.sniper 3 (PCIe v3.0) with an EVGA titan X SC, 16gig DDR3.
if i ever get VR, mine should be ok.

Surely the recommended spec they have given is powerful enough to make it through the entire lifecycle of the CV1?

Are you kidding?
As with all P.C. hardware, the more you have the more it gets pushed. All depends on the graphical fidelity you want to have.

As more advanced games come out, frame rates drop on any equipment. As such it's either upgrade your system or down grade the visual quality to keep frame rates high.

I'd think a GTX970 will be pushed from the get go on AAA titles. your pushing 2 1080×1200 at 90Hz .

I just got a 6700k, with the new asus board it overclocked to 4.7ghz on air, its fast and should be good for a long time.

Going to wait before updating the GPU, hopefully Pascal will be right around the corner when I get my rift.

Depends on whether you're going to be doing any 3D modelling, developing or video editing. If you're just using it as a Rift machine then you'll be fine with a 4790K or even the i5 equivalent (who's name escapes me for the moment).

I got myself a 6700K a couple of months ago and am very impressed with it.

If you're not doing any sort of development work and want a new CPU you could always opt for the i5 6600K.

I would just get the newer 6700. I went that direction partly due to the motherboard features which included tons of usb 3 ports and internal Usb 3 headers. And once m2 pcie x4 drives get cheaper I'm going to see a huge decrease in loading times. Plus there has to be something said about newer tech.
It's been 2 months since I've updated and I have no complaints. I expect this cpu/motherboard combo to last just as long as my i5-2500k. The only update I want to do later in the summer or fall is replace my 970 with a newer faster single card. I'm holding off on the 980ti right now.

Seems like they're about the same performance: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

This couldn't be further from the truth. The performance of the i7 6700k is sometimes 20% faster then the i7 4790k in games. Go for the i7 6700k, it would be silly to get a i7 4780k over a i7 6700k. Take a look at the link I've put up to see the difference in action not just some benchmark.
