Awful audio stutter with Link all of a sudden. Caused by recent update?

(post & title were edited on March 15th after I discovered that this is an audio stutter issue not related to general performance issues)

About a couple of weeks ago I started getting really bad sound stutter when using Link with Quest (1 gen). By stutter I mean that for example the sound rapidly cuts in and out. Link is now unusable for me.

I don't understand what happened, because earlier this year everything was working fine and I have made no hardware changes. I had the Link bitrate set at 350 via the Debug tool because it made the visuals look a lot better (less blotches, banding etc). Above 350 I started to get stutter, which is understandable. But now even with the default bitrate it's stutter all the way. The stutter is clearly there even when looking at the Rift menu, so it's not app dependent.

Has anyone recently experienced the same? Could an Oculus update have caused this? I'm running app version 25.0.0.57.658. I have tried restarting the Oculus service multiple times as well as restarting the computer. The problem is really unfortunately because I won't be able to spend hours troubleshooting something that was working fine before.

My CPU is an i7 8700 and my GPU an RTX 2070 Super. Until recently this was enough to keep things smooth.

I reset the headset but the issue remains. Waiting for a bt headphones now... It's my last hope.

As a heads up, BT headphones for video games in general are pretty bad because of the latency. It will be VERY noticeable (as in, you’ll fire a gun then noticeably hear the gunshot after a delay). That’s why you’ll never see musicians using them while playing either.

also, from an audio routing point of view, the Bluetooth headphones won’t fix the stuttering. The stuttering is a processing issue, not an audio routing issue. Otherwise there’d be no reason for both the native speakers and audio jack to be giving you the same result...

Do you mean bt connexion to Quest 2 ? I'm talking about connecting bt headphone to PC. I've done many tests. There is no audio stuttering on PC. The issue occurs through the headset speakers and 3.5mm port, I just reset oculus software again and it doesn't help at all. I'm hoping audio delay is not too bad with bt headphone because it's my last option.

Yeah, I see how there could be no stuttering directly from headphones to the PC, because that stuttering is probably a bandwidth issue over the cable.

As far as Bluetooth in general, it has latency. It doesn’t matter what you hook it to, it has latency. I’m not saying this to be contrarian/rude, just giving you a heads up. You wouldn’t notice latency with listening to music, because that wouldn’t do anything. With a game you’ll definitely notice, and with movies/TV you can usually go into the TV/Blu-ray player settings and set it up so the TV projection delays accordingly to the amount of Bluetooth latency, so it’ll feel normal.

I tried a BT headphones. Latency is real... Then I bought a gaming hp with 2.4Ghz connectivity and it's a game changer. Immersive as hell, no latency. Air Link works well too, audio distortion is a not a problem anymore.

So, it seems that Oculus did eventually fix this audio stutter issue. I was unable to find the fix in the Oculus home release notes, but I tested last week and Link audio is working as intended, at least with my Quest 1.

I'm glad this was resolved, even if it took a while.

the problem remains for me. its been 3 months straight.
