I'm just finding out that if you buy a game on the oculus desktop you cant download them to the headset. Is this true?

The store in the PC desktop app only sells Rift (PC) games. That may also entitle you to the Quest version, if there is one, and if that game supports cross-buy. Here is a page listing all Rift apps that support cross-buy.

For games that support cross-buy, you would have to go to the Quest store to claim the app (it should show the price as "Free" if you've bought the Rift version) before you can install it to your headset.

If you have a VR-capable PC, you can also play Rift (PC) games on your Quest by connecting your Quest to your PC with a Link cable, or over WiFi with AirLink or Virtual Desktop.

If you've bought a Rift game that you can't play, you can request a refund.

DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3.
