Categories and 'Genres'

Right now the Share submission process requires a Category and some Genres for any submitted application. However, they're pretty limited.

Category options are

  • Full Game

  • Experience

  • Tech demo

  • Pre-release

  • Official mod

This really doesn't have any accommodation for tools like my Shadertoy VR app, which is essentially a development tool. I can think of a number of applications out there that don't really count as either a game or experience, but don't fall into the other categories either.

  • Janus VR

  • Social apps like VR Chat or RiftMax

  • Visual music construction apps

  • Architectural visualization programs (these might count as experience, but they could also easily include editing functionality)

Even Steam has a section for non-game software. Could we get an expanded set of genres, and maybe a top level category like 'Application'?

Yeah, I think "Application" could work. But then again, any program could be called an "Application", just like everything is basically an "Experience" of some sort. I can ask about it, though.

'Experience' generally conveys something that is non-interactive or minimally interactive.

Granted, all games are applications, but not all applications are games. I don't think if 'Application' was added in addition to game that anyone would be confused as to the meaning, and it would enable people searching Share to filter more effectively.
