What Questions Do You Have For Team Oculus On Samsung Gear?

Hi Everyone,

I managed to get an audience with developers of the Oculus Gear VR for the Newspaper I work with...any and all questions welcome.

Let me know what you all want to ask!

🙂

I'm leaning towards asking a lot of Cinema VR questions...so hopefully people can give me more creative questions to ask

-I would like to replace and buy new Face Foams for my Gear VR, if Oculus knows where to get some or if they could speak with Samsung about offering them 🙂

-Question/Request: if Oculus could store the Gear VR App thumbnails directly on the phone again, as they once were in the beginning and not like now where you have to have an internet connection to see any thumbnails.

-if there are any plans for DLNA/Netflix/Video Store/youtube support in Oculus Cinema or will this have to come from a third party?

Thank you.

I like the last question. Definitely believe streaming would put this app over the moon.

Not sure if they are of any value but here is what I have in mind. Thanks for the idea anyway!

- Any plan to enable Gear VR users to grab apps from Oculus Share? Or any work on a Gear VR Share?

- How big is the Oculus team working on the Gear VR?

- Would they allow us to disable the in-gear app to use the lens as a simple Cardboard and try the apps from Google?

- Any plan on local "multiplayer"? Like seeing each other through a virtual world

- Is the camera feature available for developpers? What I'd love is a way to record a video and share with other people so we can see what they see. That would be so cool!

Tech issues regarding apps would be great

These are just a few of the apps that are having issues.

Just goes black and then back to menu
Dodge this Demo - Was going to try the full version but I am not buying any apps until these glitches are fixed.
Mortal Blits VR Lite- Same things was going to get full but demo doesn't even work
Shooting Showdown -
Both new YouVisit Apps are crashing also. Just get a black screen and goes back to menu.

Vanguard actually looks like it wants to load. I see the loading status bar. I hear maybe 2 seconds of music that kicks on once the status bar gets pasted half way. Then screen goes back to menu.

I am using S6 fully updated. I have deleted the apps and installed both through VR and through just the app on my phone with the same results.

Also a side note. I tried the the Speech Center which I know is not on the Oculus app but thought I would give it a try since it was the silver winning in the Jam Contest. This app you need to load first and then hook your phone into the Gear VR. Well this app crashes and resets my background picture to default blue one my S6 came with. Very Strange.

Even deleted the Oculus app and reinstalled to try and repair. No luck. Any suggestions would be great

Do they plan on linking Netflix or some LAN streaming for video in the cinema. That would save a lot of space on the Samsung phones. 3D movies alone are are 2 - 5 gigs.

When will they make a theater within the gear vr dedicated to watching 2d pov movies for people who wish to ditch the theater and head tracking and simply watch a POV video with a screen that encompasses the entire filed of view? If I wore a cam two years ago and went skiing down a mountain I certainly don't want to watch that in an empty theater. I want to see a large immersive screen view to relive it. I also don't want head tracking but I think the screen can be stationary in the current gear vr.

Also, if they're looking for more evidence that this is a worthwhile addition they can go to clips4sale and see the massive collection of 2d porn shot in POV style that people have been buying over the years and pathetically watching on their computer monitor desperately trying to get the POV experience. Those videos will be obsolete when people start filming in 360 degrees but still, if they could create a bigger stationary screen in gear vr now it might entice more porn customers just waiting for a better way to watch the videos they already have.

I thought you could watch such videos by putting them in a videos folder on the Gear VR? I've never done it, but I thought this was how people have already been watching their own videos in 360 without using the Oculus Cinema?

Yes, you can already see 360 videos in the 360 Video Player. Or is this specifically for 180 video?

I'm talking about regular 2d videos shot as POV's . For instance this one shot on a roller coaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_lcZcBcQ0o

It looks to me like the gear vr doesn't go to any great lengths to try and make people feel immersed in a video like this. It's a POV so it makes no sense to watch it in a theater environment. I believe there is a setting to watch a video with the screen locked in position but I think it's still the same size screen as in the theater setting and it looks like it's at a distance.
For a 2d POV video you would want the screen as large as possible and the background to be black as night.
From what I gather the best you can get is a screen locked in position and a dark background but it's still the same size as the one in the theater so all that space is just going to be dark wasted space.

I have imported in 180 degree movies into oculus. They show up in the Milk VR . It does do the 180 in front and behind you so technically it makes a 360 movie but it just repeats the same image "behind you" if you get what I am saying. It does work. Just make a folder in your root directory called VoltVR . Any movie you put in there will play in the Milk VR app under downloads. I have done it before. Wish there was a better database for 360 or 180 movies. The resolution seems to suck pretty bad on any 360 degree movie right now though. Most videos the resolution is a tad over intolerable.

Also in regards to the Oculus Cinema. Have you tried the void setting in the Cinema. That zooms in pretty good. Plus if they blow up the screen any larger those pixels are going to look pretty bad. It pretty borderline on the resolution as is. Any bigger and I think the picture quality would suffer. Hence why 360 degree videos are a little out of wack.
