Back to Hogwarts - Walk and fly around the school - V.0755

Hello Rifters,

am I the only one, who wants to walk and fly around Hogwarts castle? I don't think so - so here's my solution:

BACK TO HOGWARTS
- a free, non-commercial fan project -

HogwartsFlugsmall.jpg

It's Version 0.755, but the FINAL VERSION, because I'm running out of my trial license.

Being an absolute beginner, - with no idea of programming -, to the whole topic, don't expect too much. It's just a (huge) demo to walk around Hogwarts on 4 terrains (only 2 more or less "finished") with a great looking Hogwarts model (made by DANIO MORENO), music (by HORRORPEN) a lake with an island and a tower on it, forests, animals, farm etc, etc ... and of course a working flying broomstick to fly over it all...

Although there would be so much to do (stop the "funny moving" of the trees (!), terrain design, repair the corrupted and adds the rest of the Hogwarts model; Adding: animations, Hogsmeade station, Hogsmeade village, more animated animals, a unicorn, griffon, dumbledore, more sounds, more interaction, game components etc, etc.....), but as I said, I'm running out of the license...

Before you start 2 things: :!:
1) !!!! ATTENTION: Takes a long time after the "Powered by Unity" sign to start !!!!!!
2) Two issues (without solution yet):

The tunnel: Normally it takes just a few seconds, but sometimes it seems, that you are stuck in there. You might have to wait to get to your destination. Wait and don't move!
Mounting the broomstick for the first time: Sometimes it doesn’t work! No idea, why. No solution yet. You have to start the demo again. !!!! GAMEPAD must be ready before starting the demo to work correctly!!!!

I recommend to read the "READ ME" PDF before starting (while downlaoding the demo e.g.). Download it here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6gftfhfgnfhsd9d/Back%20to%20Hogwarts%20V0.755-%20README.pdf

And the Demo of course - "Back to Hogwarts - V.0755"

BACK TO HOGWARTS - THE DEMO

"LEVEL 1" - In the mood

You are at a - very well known - place, enjoying your holidays. While watching the sea and mountains, listening to the seagulls you get in a mood and remember the time at your old school of witchcraft and wizardry. Perhaps there's a way..... Well, why not visiting the OWL statue in the garden....

(BTW: Do you know, what the floo network is ??? )

"LEVEL 2" - Back again

Of course you know, that there is no direct way to Hogwarts castle, whether by apparation nor by floo network. And so the network transports you to a forest nearby. Follow the way down to Hogwarts Lake. Being there, you have the choice:

Go left and follow the way around the lake, passing some sheep and may visit a small farm and follow the way to the Boathouse (you should visit it!) and climb up the stairs to castle Hogwarts – and/or

Go right to the "Crow Tower" on the island in the lake. Find your hidden broomstick (if you need a way to reach the island - there will be one – remember, it’s Hogwarts nearby 😉 )

Of course, if you fly on your broomstick, you can land everywhere on - even as possible - ground (Terrain & Crow Tower & big courtyard at the entrance of Hogwarts & inside Quidditch stadium & in ONE Hogwarts tower – with the dark brown wooden floor)

But don't smash Hagrid's pumpkins with your broomstick !!! 😉 )

I recommend to walk around first and then fly over the scene you have seen as a pedestrian before. But that's up to you. And the terrains on the right aren't finished (and so "empty") yet...

I also recommend to stay while walking around and to sit while flying...

For Game Controls - read the "Read Me" file please!!!!

I hope you enjoy hiking at hogwarts lake and flying over Hogwarts as much as I do.... 😄

Gunair

PS: Again, big "Thank You" to DANI MORENO and "HORRORPEN" and to all makers of the used assets...

Hello. I know two small people who would love to try this. Is there any chance you can make builds for Mac and Linux? (For Linux choose 'x86 + x86_64 (Universal)'.)

Hello again,

I have no idea of Linux or Mac, and cant test the built version here, but hear are a mac and a linux version.

Please, give some feedback, if it works or not.

"Read me" PDF (not included in the zip files) - but read it!!!:

Thanks for the Mac build. I think you're doing yourself down with modesty, this looks really good as far as I've played it so far! The portraits on the walls in the villa are a nice touch.

I've tried a few times but I haven't been able to mount the broomstick with 'F' on the keyboard. I've tried standing in different places around the owl statue but it doesn't help. It seems that the broomstick is necessary though for getting to Hogwarts so I haven't made it there yet. I'm uploading you a video of my first 10 minutes on the Mac so you can see how it's looking. There's some sort of issue with a black shadow creeping up through the floor in places.

Oh Good to hear, that the MAC built works!!

OH I should have better explained the demo to Non-Potter-fans I guess

The owl is just the "dooropener". You can't use THAT broomstick... If you visit the statue, you should see the floo network "advice" appearing... From that moment, the floo network is available. That means, you have to use the floo network to get to hogwarts, which means... step in the fireplace! (and that's the place, where I hope, the "tunnel" is working....)

And after that, the REAL demo begins (level 2)...

PS: I recommend a Gamepad, especially for flying...

I went through the fireplace and ended up in a phone box somewhere else. I walked around a bit and finally saw the castle across the water. I'm guessing you're supposed to fly across the water, but in lieu of a broom I walked under it. Then at a certain point after I'd made it to the other side the cliff face was too steep to negotiate so I had to give up there (this was all in the video I recorded for you). Is there a broomstick somewhere else that I'm supposed to pick up? Or do I have the broomstick with me the whole time? If the latter, then I can confirm that it isn't possible to mount the broomstick using 'F' on the keyboard on a Mac.

mephisto8, it actually looks like the answers to your questions are in the PDF linked in the first post. 🙂

gunair, what a GREAT demo. The sheer vastness of the explorable area is amazing, with so many Harry Potter references and locations that can finally be seen in VR. I can't even imagine how long it took to put this together (actually I'm guessing 4 months since your Unity trial is up).

Any fans of Harry Potter should definitely try this one out!

You're right drash, my bad. I should have read the full PDF. I've just been back in to try and find the broomstick and got a little lost. I made it to the waterfall this time though -- intense audio, good stuff. Will go back in tomorrow and try to find the broomstick.

This is the problem with black shadows I mentioned: http://imgur.com/a/gSkbK#0

Please be explicit on how to get the broom to fly. Haven't read HP.

Thanks

Walkthrough to get to the real broomstick that you can fly:
NOTE: This video contains SPOILERS.

From the youtube description:

The above contains SPOILERS. However, if you're stuck and curious where to find the broomstick in this Oculus Rift demo, this is the video for you. It's not the white broomstick next to the white owl in the Tuscany house area. It might not obvious what a "floo network" is if you haven't read/watched Harry Potter, and it takes a bit of searching to actually find the real broomstick on top of all that.

This video does not contain anything else from the demo other than what it takes to find the broomstick. There is a lot more in this demo and I'd encourage you to go play it yourself to look around. The explorable landscape is quite vast, and flying around on the broomstick is enjoyable once you get used to the controls.
