Design it, Drive it: Speedboats is an Oculus Rift speedboat simulator that lets you design and drive your own speedboats on a Windows PC. Whether you end up with boats that are slow, fast, turn well, chine walk, or tend to blow over at high speeds or not depends on what you do with the shape and design of the hull.

For $25 ???? I'm not sure that'll grab everyone's attention at this stage of development.

What price would you be a buyer at?

I don't think I'd play it enough to justify the price right now. I have too many unfinished games I need to finish first...but that does look pretty nice! The terrain looks sweet, good job! Any plans to add multi-player racing in the future?

Very Interesting; I'm a huge fan of vehicle Simulations - both driving and flight. I've owned several boats and personal watercraft and have always wanted a more serious simulation for the water.  From what I've seen so far, it looks like the basic model works quite nice. 🙂

I used to dabble in R/C boats and even scratch-built one hull myself so the design aspect is a neat feature.

I used to own a 18' Jet-boat with a 400+hp V8. Do you have any plans to add boats with in-board motors, V-drive, Jet-drive and other hull designs (Flat-bottom, tunnel, etc.)? Maybe Drag-Boats? It might be interesting to have some personal watercraft and some race & obstacle courses to run with realistic physics too.

Thanks, guys.

jademan:  Unfortunately right now there aren't anywhere near enough players for multiplayer to work at all.  Things will need to really pick up for that to be an option.

deanogur:  I grew up on the water too with a family speedboat as a kid 25+ years ago.  We had a Switzercraft SK-175 that went 62 mph.  Pretty slow compared to a lot of the go-fast boats out there these days, but it was enough to have some fun with the trim buttons.  I tried a few of the boat games and sims out there but nothing really captured any of the interesting dynamics like chine walk, blow over, porpoising, etc., so I tried an old idea that'd been kicking around in the back of my mind and it worked well enough to run with it.   After I got a DK2 I tried it in VR (one of the scenes is my home lake as a kid) and it really felt like being back home, only with a much faster boat.  😄

R/C:  I was the physics engine programmer/vehicle dynamics engineer behind VRC Pro, an R/C car simulator, for 14 years, so have dabbled a little bit with cars there although I never had my own R/C vehicles.  I've seen R/C boats run a couple times though.  Pretty neat.

Other hull designs:  The next thing I'm planning is to expand the system to allow other types of hulls to be built.  Right now everything is just vee-bottom outboards as you probably saw, so it's going to take some restructuring and a lot of work to allow other types to be designed too.   I don't want to make any promises, but the plan is to expand next into tunnel boats (outboards).   There are a bunch of real life tunnel boat racers playing (including a Formula One driver) that love it and have asked for those.

After that we'll see where things sit.  If the sales are there to support expanding into more hulls after the tunnel boats, I'd like to do so.  Adding more types of boats is a higher priority for me at this stage than adding multiplayer racing or anything else.  I really would like to try a tunnelboat in VR, something that goes 130-150 mph and takes turns at 3-5g would be pretty mindblowing, I think.  😄  It might be a bit more accessible too since those boats handle so much better than vee bottoms.  No chine walk, etc..

@jtw62074  - great info - thanks!  I'll be picking this up and keeping an eye on developments; I like to support projects like this where I can and it's certainly something I'd love to see expanded in time.

In the meantime, I wish you the best in your efforts and I'll try to spread the word in Sim circles where I frequent. 🙂
