I used to drive my Rift using a Thinkpad P51 (7700hq + quadro m1200) and a Sonnet egpu (Breakaway box) and gtx1080 for a few years without any problems.

So, yes it should work if the TB3 controller is in your computer is using all lanes (full speed). Some brands use only half the lanes so do some checking before buying.

It might work, or it might be money wasted, you still need a sizeable cpu to be able to drive vr applications.  Also installing the software might not be possible.
