Xbox controller question

I was able to pair it with my go but the next time I went to use it the light just flashed. I wound up having to pair it as a new game pad again. How do you use the controller without having to pair it as new each time?

Is the go meant to be turned off

Are you meant to turn the go off every time you take it off or do you just take it off?
