MICROPROSE: Carrier Command 2 VR has arrived - reviews and impressions!

The new trailer:

According to the devs:

"Carrier Command 2 is a real-time strategy game that puts you in command of a futuristic carrier able to launch a vast array of aircraft and amphibious units. Compete against AI or human players and hop into every single vehicle to take matters into your own hands!"

Source: https://www.microprose.com/games/carrier-command-2

Normally I'm not into such strategy games, but this does look kinda cool in the trailer. Might give it a go. This game is for high-end VR enthusiasts only though - judging by the specs:

  • OS: Windows 7 / 8 / 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6440 / Ryzen 5 2400
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 3080Ti / AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 1 GB available space

Not sure if that GPU recommendation is correct - the game does not look that demanding, but of course I could be wrong:

Also note, according to the Steam page, you need an Index or Vive hmd to play this game - no Oculus or WMR hmds are supported. Might also explain why you only see Index controllers in the trailer.

RoadToVR just wrote an article about the game:

https://www.roadtovr.com/carrier-command-2-vr-support-cross-play-co-op/

They did forget to mention that 3080 Ti is the recommended gpu and that only Index and Vive are supported, but then again, who cares about such minor details, lol

Note that the game will also be available in 2D - and here the recommended video card is not a RTX 3080 Ti, but an extremely slow GeForce 870 Ti - but I don't recall any 870 Ti, maybe they mean 780 Ti 😉 Anyway, there is hope that the VR version will not need a 3080 Ti.  Typically, strategy games with many units will need a fast cpu more than a fast gpu. I don't see many units in Carrier Command 2 trailers, and the view distance is great, still it will be highly unusual needing only 780 Ti for 2D and a 3080 Ti behemoth for VR. Devs adding a 3080 Ti for VR could just be a way of saying that they don't know what gpu you'll need for VR yet, but surely a 3080 Ti will be enough. Then again, users with a Vive Pro 2 using 120 Hz and insisting on max image quality in 120 fps may need a 3080 Ti, who knows, lol.

Btw, here's the 2D trailer which is different from the VR trailer, but of course both show similar game content:

From reading the Steam forum, I get that if you buy either the VR version or the 2D version you get both. My guess is then that these 2 versions will have the same price 😉

Btw, for those thinking Carrier Command 2 VR looks dated that might be true - or very false, depending on your perspective. This is the game Carrier Command from the Amiga - published in 1988:

- and back then the game was kinda king of its hill - within the genre 😉

I still have a working Amiga 500 - might even have the game, can't remember for sure, have tons of diskettes and Amiga games hidden in boxes not opened the last 20 years or so ... 😁

Devs have updated the Steam page, launch date is August 10. Furthermore UploadVR has published more about the game, quote:

"Originally designed as a PC-only title, developer Geometa listened to the community who wanted a VR version, and so Carrier Command 2 VR was born. The studio reveals that: “While VR was not originally in our roadmap, the literalism of the diegetic interfaces within the game has made it very easy to introduce VR to Carrier Command – this is the same game, with the same balance and same mechanics!”

“In the VR edition, you can control all the same systems, vehicles, and controls, from the bridge of the ACC Epsilon Carrier. Use your VR controllers to move and interact with controls, and remote pilot vehicles. Use the holomap with 3D vision. Move around the bridge, use screens, staff the stations, take first person remote control,” the team adds.

While both versions are essentially different videogames the launch will see both titles bundled together, so there’s no need to pay twice."

The 3080 Ti is still recommended gpu - and still only Index and Vive hmds are supported.

This shot does look really awesome:

Taken from Ben Lang's new short article about the game:

UploadVR also published a small article about the game today - not sure it says anything new, the game seems to get a lot of attention on those news sites, while important games and apps like EverSlaught, Cooking Simulator, DeMagnete, Vermillion and Furious Seas get no attention, very strange indeed:

Release trailer arrived today:

Today Microprose launched the game - the 3080 Ti is still the recommended gpu, and only Index and Vive hmds are supported. Well, at least the price is only $40 😅 The price includes the pancake version though.

Note that the $40 is with 20% off, offer lasts until August 17. Get everything here:

BTW, many are already crying about the price - but for the VR version, if you can afford the recommended gpu, surely $40 are peanuts!

Didn't Carrier Command also cost about $40 for the Amiga in the 1980s? 🤔 😉

Breaking News, lol - Paradise Decay did get the game working with his Rift-S - but later in the video he says some Touch buttons don't work, so not sure if the game really works with Rift hmds, maybe...

This isn't a game for casual gamers - looks like you need to spend some time getting to know the game. Paradise Decay did a really bad job testing the game, but at least he admits in the end of the video that he's got no clue how to play this game. Well, at least the game was running using his RTX 2070, but hard to judge performance as he didn't really play the game - no big battles shown.

Ok, seems the 3080 Ti might not be a joke:

"Game is EXTREMELY GPU intensive. It's only some low poly graphics with baked lighting in intro scene or carrier cockpit, but it makes my 1080ti reproject. I get 55 frames while rendering at 1800x1800 resolution. How did they manage to do this?"

I am sorry but I could not even watch all of that launch trailer, man those graphics look so dated - like something from the 90's to me.
