New Gear VR and Rift Releases for June 30th

VirtuaJulian

New games and experiences rolling out today on June 30th! There's a pretty diverse grouping of things to check out this week, from new games, experiences, and apps.

Of the week's releases, I recommend Notes on Blindness on Gear VR, which takes
you on a six-part interactive non fiction journey using new forms of
storytelling, gameplay mechanics and virtual reality to explore the cognitive
and emotional experience of blindness.

If there's a new game, app, or experience that you are particularly fond of, we'd love to hear what you think in the comments below. Enjoy!

World of Diving

World of Diving is the online, multiplayer game that will bring out your inner explorer by putting the murky, mysterious depths of our oceans and their hidden treasures within your grasp. Armed with hi-tech deep-sea diving gear and submarine vehicles, a photo camera, and your exploration kit, it's up to you and your friends to reveal, salvage and catalog the ocean's mysteries. You can even step into the shoes of a game designer, and build and share your own diving locations and missions with your fellow divers. Check out the all new trailer here:

Notes on Blindness

Arte Experience presents Notes On Blindness, a VR journey into a world beyond sight. In 1983, after decades of steady deterioration, writer and theologian John Hull became totally blind. To help him make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began documenting his experiences on audio cassette. These original diary recordings form the basis of this project, a six-part interactive non fiction using new forms of storytelling, gameplay mechanics and virtual reality to explore his cognitive and emotional experience of blindness.

Prepared to be scared! The Presence is an interactive, live-action, horror film, built for Gear VR. The story follows four characters through a séance gone wrong. As the movie progresses viewers are able to affect the point of view and discover different aspects of a complex story. The Presence illustrates two new approaches to VR storytelling: free roam and cinematic. NOTE: contains strong language and violence and is recommended for a mature audience only.

When someone has tried Star Chart can you let me know what it is like and how much content you get? 🙂 Would be interested but don't like buying without reviews 🙂

It's cool seeing the planets hovering in front you you like toys, but honestly there does not seem to be a ton of content.  The only objects you can visit seem to be the planets and a few selected moons.  You can turn on or off location labels, but selecting particular locations is a little finicky.   You can also view the night sky from your location on earth.  It seems to display stars down to about 7-8 magnitude (at a guess) and you can highlight many, but it does not give you much information other than the name.  Additionally, you can't highlight all of them.  I have not found a way to study a constellation without the figure popping up.   They have DSO's mapped, but not labeled.  So if you're wondering what that spiral galaxy is over there - this app is not going to tell you.

That said, the dev is promising new content.  This has a ton of potential, but right now it's rather light in weight.  If you were hoping for something like Starry Night for the desktop or SkySafari for mobile - it's nowhere near even the basic level.

It has potential.

FWIW - I don't regret the purchase one bit tho - mainly because astronomy is one of my passions.

I picked up World of Diving, and it really looks impressive.  However, it seems to be a keyboard experience.  I cannot find a way through settings to activate the controller...

Any help?

I'm a little wary of World of Diving as it's had a slightly chequered early access history. Until the recent release of the commercial VR HMD's it was generally considered by many to be an abandoned early access Steam title as the devs hadn't updated it for ages.
