It seems like we'll get:

The new Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3000 series cards will reportedly offer more VRAM on all cards, so we could see:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 12GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 - 12GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - 16GB.

Maybe reduced power consumption due to 7nm. And maybe the best - if it's true:

NVIDIA is reportedly set to offer its next-gen GeForce RTX 3000 serieds at cheaper prices than the current-gen GeForce RTX 2000 series, which would be interesting. NVIDIA faced considerable backlash with the pricing on its GeForce RTX 2000 series, even though they still sold like hotcakes a price reduction is always welcome.

- of course, and that's probably why we only got RTX reflections - and DLSS, to help with the 4K gaming.

But I don't care enough for flat pancake gaming to even remotely consider upgrading the 51" 3D plasma, lol. Well, maybe if I could get a 3D 4K oled tv... 😉 Have too many 3D movies to lose that functionality.

Still the 3080/3090 should have more than enough power to support more RTX features than just reflections - even in 4K, but maybe aimed at 4K 60 Hz then (results below are with Ultra settings, but no RTX - just to show the headroom):

I guess these results also communicate quite nicely what an awesome upgrade for VR the RTX 3090 is - in current VR games kinda feels like having unlimited power when starting Rift CV1 ss 2.0 games. And much the same with Index in 90 - 120 Hz.

Then jump from 3080 to 3090 is quite massive too in Doom Eternal 4k.

Btw, before thinking that 1920x1080 60 Hz is old, think again - that's where we all meet when you activate all the RTX eye candy in Cyberpunk 2077 - even if you got a 3080/3090:

You need at least a 3080 just for 60 fps in 1920x1080 in Cyberpunk 2077 - if you want all the RTX you can get 🤓 But I guess Doom Eternal devs didn't want to have too many RTX users crying over their performance, lol.

It's not that "we only got" - it is that the 3090 is a Workstation Card, not a Gaming Card (which has been pointed out by specialists in this Industry).

Trying to force this to look like a gaming card won't do much good, and there will be a lot of letdowns leading to "we only got this" and "we only got that."

On top of which, gaming enthusiasts tend to focus on the competitive side of the game itself, not the ability to get better reflections since things like reflections don't help win matches.

I mean... reflections in a game from the Doom franchise? lol - players are moving too fast to pause and reflect!

This isn't Skyrim where everyone's favorite thing to do is stand atop the highest mountain peak and stare at the world around. Doom, and the like, are competitive games for competitive gamers.

Some gamers compete with in-game skills, others compete by... purchasing hardware. Some gamers climb up the Tournament Ranks, others post about their gaming rigs. The 3090 doesn't really fit too well in either camps right now it would seem.

Nice overview:

Games only supporting DLSS are of course not on the list.

Cyberpunk 2077 sure looks great, I've totally maxed out all settings - but I'm using 1920x1080 with a plasma TV.

I do get dips below 60 fps with the 3090 - I guess, feels slightly like vsync is off, and the game is running fine.

With DLSS Quality does feel slightly like super sampling in VR, thus no jaggies with the plasma, lol.

Using a controller is destroying the game, can't aim properly. And using mouse + keyboard I can't sit in the couch but am way too close to the screen. The gameplay in the very start of the game has so far failed to impress me. I'll give the game 30 min more later before considering refunding the game again.

Red Dead Redemption now with DLSS if anyone cares 😉

Did actually buy one pancake game some days ago, namely Death Stranding, and DLSS shines in that game. All jaggies gone, and the image quality using 1080p with the plasma looks - dare I say - really close to 4k res. Or like using high levels of ss in VR, thus 1080p never looked better.

Just a quick look on Steam users and their gpus:

Percentage of Steam users

RTX 3090 = 0.34%

RTX 3080 Ti = not registered (= less than 0.15 %)

RTX 3080 = 0.81 %

RTX 3070 = 1.48 %

RTX 3060 Ti = 0.35

RTX 3060 = 0.52

In sum 3.5 % - thus way more users than users with hmds, but still not exactly any kind of market domination, lol. I left out the very weak laptop editions, but Steam only has registered two laptop models, namely 3070 (= 0.19 %) and 3060 (=0.51 %), thus not anything rocking the Series 30 boat anyway 😉

DLSS makes good sense - for when you include Series 20 we see:

Percentage of Steam users

RTX 2080 Ti = 0.65 %

RTX 2080 Super = 0.88 %

RTX 2080 = 0.86 %

RTX 2070 Super = 2.27 %

RTX 2070 = 1.89 %

RTX 2060 Super = 1.39 %

RTX 2060 = 5.81 %

In total 13.75 % for Series 20. Adding all Series 20 and 30 desktop model we get 17%. Adding the laptops gets us 18% - thus nearly 1/5 of Steam users may be able to get more performance from DLSS. More importantly this also means that at least 20 % of all Steam users have gpus able to provide awesome VR experiences (also including AMD gpus), corresponding to gpus with GTX 1080 level performance or better.

Interestingly, none of the AMD 6700, 6800 and 6900 video cards are on the Steam list, making the RX 6000 series look like the worst paper launch ever 🤔

It seems like the supply situation might finally be improving. Yesterday I saw two models of RTX 3080 Ti that were available to purchase at MSRP here in Canada--the Asus TUF for $2199(CAD) at NewEgg.ca, and the EVGA FTW for $1899(CAD) at Canada Computers. I really want a 3080 rather than a 3080 Ti (because it's hard to come to terms with spending an extra $800 for a few extra fps and 2 more GB of VRAM), but I thought long and hard about that FTW, and even had it in my cart for a while. Both cards were gone this morning, but the FTW is back again at Canada Computers this afternoon, so there seems to be a trickle of cards coming in.

In the end I decided to be patient and wait for the 3080. I noticed that EVGA's queue for the 3080 FTW had a major surge the other day, so hopefully there will be a corresponding retail release for that card soon.

I'm still tempted by that 3080 Ti, but I don't think the performance gain will be very significant over the 3080, and the price difference would almost pay for a 500 GB Steam Deck.

Agreed, it's hard to justify going from 3080 to 3080 Ti for the big jump in price, but small jump in both vram and performance. Even 3090 may make little sense for the performance jump, but at least you get more than double the vram.

Rising Star

I usually skip a generation or two, and then jump in with both feet once I finally upgrade.

So having a 1080ti, it was never even a consideration upgrading to the 2000 series. And now that I have a 3090 I will most likely skip the 4000 series completely (unless they do something radical, which is unlikely).

Yeah, I usually do the same (skipping a gen or two). I did go from a GTX 980 to a GTX 1080, but that's the only single-gen upgrade I've ever done, and the cash I got selling my 980 covered half the price of the 1080. It's been 5 years though, and I'm itching for an upgrade!

Given how long I've gone with my current card, I can justify spending a little more than I have in the past, but the 3080 is already pretty pricey compared to my previous cards, and feels like the sweet spot in the 3000 lineup for performance/price. In Canadian dollars (ignoring sales tax), my GTX 980 was $649, my GTX 1080 was $849, and now I'm looking at $1199 for the RTX 3080. Anything higher than that just feels like I'm throwing money away, even though I could afford it.
