Severe GPU shortages may last at least until 2022

This is quite sad information, but the gpu shortage is severe and may last for at least 1 year - more info here:

" [...] AIBs like Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, and others are currently receiving fewer than 20 units of Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics cards per country in the South Asian region, with China being the only exception with around 100 units this month."

The take-home-message seems to be: do not sell your current gpu before the new one is in your hands 😉

Figured my backlog is filled with games that work just fine with my GTX 1080, I don't have any real problems waiting.

Many older games look and play so much better with oled (CV1) instead of Index. Will take me more than a year to clear those games from the backlog. Going back to The Climb later tonight.

I'm on the EVGA Notify queue for an 3080 from 9/30. They're serving 9/19 now. The line has moved 3 days in 6 months.

I'm also on the list for a Kingpin 3090 (2/25/21) which is exclusive to Elite members so that line may be shorter. They're serving 12/20 now.

I really want a 3090 for MSFS 2020 and because the G2 has gorgeous visuals but is extremely demanding if you want to run it at 100% resolution.

I'm thinking that maybe I should just buy one on eBay then sell my card when my turn finally comes up. The risk is that the shortage may end by the time I get my card.

So should I gamble that the shortage will persist for another 6 months?

The more I think about it this may make sense. If I get the 3090 at the inflated eBay price, I can sell my 2080 ti at the inflated price. So +600 inflation on my 2080 ti and +1200 inflation on 3090 means I'm only paying +$600. And when my turn comes up on the EVGA Notify, I can sell and probably do better than +$600.

Does this make sense?

Well, I just paid $2,900 for an evga 3090 FTW3 on eBay. *gulp*

When I get it I can sell my 2080 ti to offset the inflated price with the inflated price of my 2080 ti.

Shoot $2,900 for a 3090! That has to be some kind of record...

Edit: Just checked ebay after posting this.. its like the wild west... some people are trying to get $3000+ Nuts!

Yeah, I got a good deal at $2,900 when you consider the other price. I had my max bid set to $3,200.

But the inflation means that my 2080 ti could sell for $1200 and not the $400 or $500 it should be worth given the 3080 is $699.

Hopefully, I end up breaking even when I get the two cards from the evga notify list in 6 months or whatever.

Seems I can get a new high-end rig with an Asus 3090 for $4k, it's slightly more tempting. Seems system builders have easier access to 3090s than single users just wanting the card.

Right now I'm considering just waiting for PS2VR. I don't spend time on sims, my oc'ed 1080 is running great in all my games, as long as I stick with 90 hz and I don't mind ASW 2.0. There is no content I want and can't play in PCVR, but if hmd and controllers are great PSVR2 would open the door to a lot of new content.

3080ti reportedly 1 month away, wonder if the throttling they're applying for mining will make any difference.

I've read that they intend to focus production on the 3080Ti rather than 3080, so hopefully there will be better availability--not that I wanted to spend even more, but I do like that it will have a little more VRAM. 10GB versus the 8GB in my 5-year-old 1080 seems like a bit of a skimpy upgrade.

Apparently Nvidia's "unbreakable" mining throttle has already been broken by a driver update, so I guess we shouldn't count on future cards avoiding scarcity caused by mining (on top of scarcity caused by other issues like poor yields or component shortages).

^^^Miners are the golden goose for Nvida so i doubt they will ever kill said goose, as miners take all the blame for limited availability and soaring card prices, and Nivda sit drowning in cash while pretending to be upset with them. lol
